The answer to the first question is simple. Obesity for an adult is having a body mass index of more then 30. The Body Mass Index is a measurement of fat, a figure based on height and weight. A normal BMI is between 19-25, overweight is from 25.5-30. There are many calculators available on line to determine BMI, this can also be done by a health professional.

Obesity is caused by a number of factors. It is often not just someone who eats too much who has an obesity problem, although taking in too many calories can cause obesity. What Health Care Cash Plans and General Health Insurance Products Can Offer

The health care cash plan was first introduced in the 1870s and was known as a hospital Saturday fund or a ‘penny in the pound’ scheme. These schemes or plans were a way for households surviving on a low income to get help with the costs of health care by contributing a small amount from their wage on a regular basis. Before the introduction of such schemes, the UK’s poor were simply left to fend for themselves, with religious institutions doing all they could during outbreaks of Plague, small pox and cholera, which were prevalent up until the Nineteenth Century. By the time the NHS was formed in 1948, contributory schemes had over 10 million members, each of whom contributed a small amount from their wage towards hospital care for themselves and their family members.

With the advent of the NHS and the changing landscape of health care provision, health care cash plans are as relevant today as they ever have been. Covering a range of everyday costs they can be a real support to individuals, and since their inception they have been developed further to offer a lot more and to provide different types of cover focusing on dental, optical and general health care. As a result, it’s important for anyone looking into health cash plans to read the individual terms and conditions and benefits of each carefully. A health cash plan is designed to be used and making a claim does not automatically mean that the policy holder’s premium will go up.

The health cash plan is suitable for everyone regardless of age, gender or medical history and covers routine checkups and treatment such as dental and optical work as well as things like hearing aids and physiotherapy. Some plans have exclusions around pre-existing conditions so it is always best to look into this before you take out a policy. Private Medical Insurance (PMI) on the other hand is a rated insurance product for acute conditions such as cancer and diabetes and costs to the policy holder depend on factors such as current health, family medical history, age and lifestyle; this type of insurance is designed to give peace of mind and assurances that the cost of expensive treatment can be covered should the worst happen and also that you receive your treatment as quickly as possible.

Health care cash plans and private medical insurance (PMI) can be used together as complementary products. Some people pay for both so as to benefit from help with day to day health care costs such as dental examinations, contact lenses and physiotherapy with the cash plan and private hospital treatment for unexpected and more acute serious health problems with PMI. You could look at the health cash plan as budgeting towards the everyday costs of your health care and private medical insurance as added peace of mind should the unthinkable happen; both options have their own benefits and what’s right for one person might not be right for the next.

See how you can use a health cash plan and private healthcare together to get the best cover for you and your family.

Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus

Diabetes mellitus is a metabolic disorder of the pancreas that affects the protein, carbohydrates and fat metabolism. There are two major forms of diabetes mellitus, the Type 1 and Type 2.

Type 1, it is formerly called as Insulin-dependent diabetes or Juvenile diabetes. This disease usually affects children, teenagers and young adults. It is characterized by no insulin production by the beta cells in the islet of Langerhans of the pancreas.

Type 2 diabetes mellitus or Non-insulin-dependent diabetes, runs in the families; it is also called Adult-onset diabetes. It is characterized by insulin resistance or insufficient insulin production. The manifestation occurs when the beta cells of the islet of langerhans secrete insulin into the bloodstream, but the blood glucose level remains elevated because of the peripheral insulin resistance and increased conversion of glycogen to glucose by the liver.

Family history and Obesity are the major risk factor in developing type 2 diabetes. Obesity is linked to insulin resistance, because an excessive fat makes it difficult for the cells to react to insulin. Being Obis or overweight makes people inactive; as a result, this reduces further the body’s ability to respond to insulin. In the past, more adults are more likely to develop this form of diabetes because they are more prone to be obis, but today, there are more kids and teenagers who are diagnosed with type 2 diabetes. Children who are in the puberty stage are also more at risk because the rise of hormone levels that can cause insulin resistance.

Signs and symptoms might vary in every person who is suffering from this disease. People may not find out that they have the disease until such time they suffered from diabetes complications.

Some people might already have the symptoms but they just ignore it or do not suspect it as diabetes. Clients with type 2 diabetes have a gradual onset of symptoms. The three classic symptoms of type 2 diabetes are polyuria (increased urination), polydipsia (increased thirst) and polyphagia (increased hunger). They might also develop fatigue, blurred vision, weight loss, sore that do not heal, urinary tract and vaginal infection, because the increased in blood glucose level supports bacterial growth.

If you already have these signs and symptoms, consult your doctor immediately for the treatment of the disease.

Type 2 diabetes can be diagnosed using the following blood testing:

? Oral glucose tolerance test

? Fasting blood glucose level

? Random blood glucose

? Postprandial glucose

? Glycosylated hemoglobin or Hemoglobin A1c.

The primary goal of the treatment is to lower down the high blood glucose levels. To do this, a client who is manifesting type 2 diabetes should have a regular check up with their doctor, have a regular exercise and have a healthy diet.

A regular check up to the doctor is needed to monitor the client’s blood glucose level. The doctor might give some medications to prevent diabetes for possible complications.

Regular exercise is necessary to eliminate the fats and calories that control the reaction to insulin. It helps metabolize carbohydrates, thus decreasing insulin requirements. Having a regular exercise will manage your weight and help you to develop your health by improving your blood pressure and blood flow. An exercise program for the client with diabetes specifies the type of exercise and the length of time to perform it. The program is tailored according to the client’s needs and lifestyle.

A person with type 2 diabetes should have a healthy diet. Diet is a major component for the treatment of every person with diabetes. Person who is suffering from diabetes should eat the same times each they but must choose what kind of food to eat. Meal planning is very necessary; this includes eating the right amount of food, eating the right food and eating meals at the right time. Some client suffering from this disease might stop taking medication after losing weight.

After many years, clients who are suffering from this disease might lead to more serious problems if the diabetes cannot be treated after the onset. These are the some of the complications that might arise: Heart failure, stroke, high blood pressure, peripheral vascular disease, nerve damage, foot sores or ulcers, that can lead to amputation, blindness and other eye disease, kidney disease and failure, macular edema and erectile dysfunction, infections of the skin, female genital tract, and urinary tract.

Handling Health Issues Of The Elderly – 4 Top Factors To Safeguard Good Health

We are living in a fast and materialistic world. People are concerned with materialistic pleasures and very often get their priorities wrong. They neglect their health and their relationships with their family, a consequence of leading a fast pace life. However, there are some responsibilities in life that an individual cannot neglect, and that is to care for the elders in your family. This is a special role of a caregiver that you have to undertake, to look after your elderly parents or a relative. It is a very rewarding experience, one that will remain with you in the future in the form of pleasant memories. Caring for the elderly is not an easy task and it can bring a significant amount of stress and worry upon the caregiver. The hard work is compounded if the person is infirm or disabled.

We often take our own health for granted and neglect to take care of ourselves. However, if we have the responsibility to look after our elderly parents, we have to consider many factors, and this includes their health. Here are a few tips that can help to safeguard the health of the elders in your care.

- Diet: Maintaining a healthy and suitable diet in respect of the elderly is of utmost importance. The older people are prone to illness more often than others and a healthy, nutritionally complete diet can keep illness at bay. Avoid large amounts of fat and salt in the diet as this slows down any recoveries from illness. Too much salt makes the circulatory system sluggish and fats can clog arteries. Instead, the diet should contain plenty of fresh fruit and vegetables to provide the necessary vitamins and minerals for the regeneration of tissues. Ensure that they get a sufficient quantity of fiber in their diet to promote bowel movement.

- Mental Health: The state of the mental health of the elderly individuals is a great concern for the caregiver. One has to make sure that they are comfortable in their surroundings. Setting a routine will help them relax and also give them a sense of being a part of the family life. The elderly are trying to cope with the changes happening in their lives; this may cause some depression or anxiety that should be taken care of with a little understanding and compassion.

- Physical Health: As a caregiver, you must ensure that the elderly in your care get regular health check ups. Any changes should be brought to the notice of the doctor immediately. This will help to diagnose problems quickly and the routine of the health checks will help the individual to relax and thus improve the general health.

- Exercise: It may not be possible for all elderly individuals to exercise as this depends on their physical conditions. However, 15 to 20 minutes of gentle exercise can work wonders for their general well being. Walking around the supermarket or walking the dog or gardening can be an exercise for the elders. The elderly in your care can be taken outdoors as often as possible as this can help to break the monotony of being confined to the house. Any outdoor activity will help to stretch the joints to reduce stiffness or immobility and raise their spirits, thus improving their overall health.

Printable – Golden Retriever Tips and Care – Health Issues

Golden retriever health is a top priority when those little bundles of fluff come home at 10 weeks. Aren’t they just the most beautiful little pups, all fluffy and if you have small children the delight on their little faces is priceless. There is now a new family member and this little puppy is going to want lots of attention and lots of love from his new family.

Take care with puppy’s back.

When a puppy is only 10 weeks old, and in fact for quite some months to come, they need to be handled with the utmost care. Picking up a puppy should always be done by putting a hand under his chest and supporting his back. If a puppy is picked up by his front legs, for example, the legs could be pulled out of place and be dislocated. His muscles have not developed at this stage and they may not be able to hold the weight of the pup if lifted by his front or back legs. The same of course, goes if the pup is lifted by its head.

These points have been brought up because if there is a small toddler in the house parents often tend to think more about the toddler being bit than about the damage that it could do to the dog. Toddlers may need some training on how to handle a very young puppy.

Common health problems.

There are a number of basic issues that are involved in caring for a golden retriever so it will be easier if I list them down:

? A good healthy diet

? Lots of exercise

? Plenty of love and care from the family and in their company as much as possible

? Brushing at least once a week or more during the shedding season

? Regular bathing

? Possible neutering

? Vaccinations – visit your vet and get the required vaccinations

? Parasite control – fleas, ticks, mange, internal parasites, giardia, hookworm, ringworm, roundworm, tapeworm and whipworm

? Eye problems

? General health problems like cancer which is common in dogs

? Heart disease

? An annual health check up by a vet

? Allergies

I know this list seems long and I agree, it is, but unfortunately everything needs to be taken into consideration, but many of the problems can be avoided or controlled reasonably easily.

Owning any pet requires a certain amount of parental care but most of the time it means setting up a schedule and being observant. The most important day to day activities that need to take place for the golden retriever’s health is a well balanced diet, exercise every day and a thorough weekly brushing with other grooming details attended to when necessary.

Golden Retriever Health – Useful Information on the Most Common Health Problems

As much as Golden Retrievers can bring incredible levels of joy and pride to a family, this venerable breed also comes with a few important peculiarities, most of them, sadly, pertaining to health issues. Though, Golden Retrievers have a life expectancy that can reach up to 15 years, recent studies have shown that the dogs typically die from health complications without even reaching the prime age of 10. Much like other breeds, the Golden Retriever can become subject to multiple health issues which affect not only its general health, but also its disposition and behavior.

Although not particularly a leading cause of death, a common condition afflicting Golden Retriever health is canine hip-dysplasia (CHD). This type of genetic joint disease results in the misalignment of the hip socket, a condition which in human terms can be most closely associated to arthritis. Goldens, like many other dog breeds, are quite susceptible to this degenerative disorder, causing much pain to a dog. In case the condition is more severe, hip dysplasia can result to partial lameness. As the Golden is considered one of the most active breeds of dogs, loss of motor functions is especially dangerous to its mental condition.

Less common but acutely important to Golden Retriever health are cataracts which clouds the eye and can ultimately lead to loss of vision. Largely hereditary, cataracts among canines are usually treatable, but obviously very troublesome and costly. Even an attempt to surgically treat a cataract condition likewise requires the dog in question to be in suitable health, not to mention the pain of searching for a veterinary clinic with the adequate equipment and tools necessary for the procedure. Retrievers with untreated eye problems can gradually lose the ability to see in night and low-light conditions, significantly affecting balance and temperament.

Allergies are also a constant bother to Golden Retriever health, manifesting mostly in the skin but sometimes in other body parts as well. While all dog breeds suffer from allergies, its affliction to a dog is especially noticeable as it affects the famous fur coat the breed is known for. Canine allergies typically follow flea bites although it is possible that a Golden develops an allergic reaction to food or even household items. Tests to determine allergies do exist with the most common being intradermal skin testing.

A chief and grave concern among owners is a bleeding disorder called the von Willebrand disease (vWD). Also a common occurrence among humans, the von Willebrand disease results in the inability of platelets to function properly for the process of blood clotting. The presence of this disease in a Golden typically renders the owner to be extra careful of the dog, with a typical side-effect being the avoidance of major physical activities which Golden Retrievers live for. Likewise, vWD normally inhibits the ability of a dog to undergo any kind of surgery, giving owners little to no option for treating other health conditions such as cataracts.

As major Golden Retriever health issues are hereditary in nature, new owners should take particular note of the reputation and track record of the breeders from which they plan to get a puppy from. Top-quality breeders do the legwork for diagnosing early symptoms of major diseases and health defects and will usually provide advice for treatment and consultation. If possible, asking for a health certification before taking a pup home is a very prudent option.

Unfortunately Golden Retrievers health problems are not limited to hereditary issues. Cancer is the leading cause of untimely death during last decades. Despite the fact that in some cases it can be treatable the death rate among diseased remains very high.

Otherwise, the lifespan of a Golden Retriever is highly dependent on diet options and its access to physical activities. Routine check-ups with a veterinarian are likewise advisable.

A Health Nutrition Guide on Metabolism and Weight Loss For Good General Health

Being healthy is something that everyone should strive for. Sometimes it’s hard in this busy world to have time to eat healthy or workout, but it’s something that needs to be done in order for people to be in good general health. The goal for most people is to lose weight, but the problem is that a lot of people go about it the wrong way. Simply eating less is not the answer. Instead, people should focus on boosting their metabolism in order to achieve weight loss and good general health. This article will focus on some health nutrition tips for those wanting to lose weight the right way by boosting their metabolism.

The first health nutrition tip for boosting metabolism is to eat small meals. Yes, eating more meals throughout the day can boost a person’s metabolism, but they have to be smaller meals. Around four or five short meals throughout the day is recommended. Also, don’t forget about breakfast, because it’s a great way to jump start a person’s metabolism right away in the morning.

Another health nutrition tip for those who want to boost their metabolism is to consume more B vitamins. Vitamin B-12 is probably the most essential B vitamin for boosting one’s metabolism. It is very essential to keep one’s energy level high throughout the day. They can be found in a variety of foods, but they can also be bought in pill or powder form as well. Try to include them with one or two small meals throughout the day!

A third health nutrition tip for boosting metabolism is that starving isn’t the answer. Most people think that if they just don’t eat they will lose weight. Well, that’s somewhat true, but it’s something people should never do! Simply not eating will actually slow a metabolism down, because the body will try to conserve as much energy as possible since it isn’t getting what it should be. Mental Health Problems – Why Most People Are Refusing to Seek Help

Mental health is to be taken very seriously, and quite arguably it is more important than our physical well-being. Because if you are not mentally stable, chances are you won’t be able to deal with the countless challenges that are part of life. Let’s face it, we all encounter periods when we feel depressed, frustrated, annoyed and just want to isolate ourselves. In such periods, we may handle it by going to sleep or finding a corner and just cry away the misery. For most of us this work, as the period will pass and then we can resume our normal life. On the other hand, some people will undergo lengthy periods of depression which demands immediate medical attention. A lack of medical care could result in the condition getting worse.

When we are mentally healthy, we are able to face the challenges of life and find solutions to them without losing our minds. In turn, if we have an inability to handle life’s pressures and challenges like losing a job, having a tragic death in your family, failing an exam or a having a prolonged period of illness, then it could be caused by a hereditary factor, genetic factor, or an injury to your brain.

Anyone suffering from a mental disorder such as depression, anxiety, or panic attacks, should receive immediate medical care. They should not be left on their own to resolve their problems, because they will be unable to help themselves. What these persons will need is a medical specialist who is a professional in the field of mental health to help them recover from their mental illness. Mental illness is very similar to physical illness in that the persons who are physically sick can’t help themselves and it is no fault of their own.

In cases where people fall ill mentally, they will need lots of emotional comfort and support, as well as effective counseling to resolve all underlying problems, so that they can return to their normal life. If a doctor assess them and discovers the root cause of the depression and mood swings, then he may recommend some form of treatment for them or prescribe some anti-depressants to help them recover.

One of the major problems with mental health illnesses is that most people who are affected by mental problems are refusing to talk about the problem and sometimes refusing to seek professional medical help due to the gross misunderstandings and misconceptions from the general society concerning mental health problems. Although we are living in a highly technological era filled with innovative and modern ideas, the attitude and behaviors of the public towards people troubled by mental health issues has not changed, mainly because most people refuse to see even a psychiatrist for help or even get treatment because of fear of what someone might say about them.

The good thing is that social, medical and Governmental organizations have now made it their point of duty to educate the general public concerning mental health problems so that anyone experiencing mental health issues will be at liberty to consult with a medical professional to resolve the problem.
